It appears renaming files (in the explorer) doesn't rename the reference in the XML file?

This is a normal file explorer. It does not touch any xml files. If you rename file names you have either to adopt the xmls by yourself or you leave the file names and overwrite the caption in the display like described here: http://www.tinywebgallery.com/en/faq.php#h51
