Ive just added an apache rewrite rule to my website, so that users can use mysite.c*m/username to reach their gallery

.htaccess looks like this:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^([A-Za-z0-9-]+)/?$ /twg/index.php?twg_album=$1&twg_show=x

but the css is not working and the pictures are not displaying.

ive been reading a bit and this might work:

use relative path from root, like this:
<img src="/folder1/folder2/file.jpg" />
not
<img src="folder2/file.jpg" />

but im not sure how to implement this in twg.

have you checked howto 44. How to enable url rewrite ?
