What triggers the xml file with the votes (*_image_counter.xml to get backed up and reset?

Why does the counter get reset?

Is there a way to stop the counter from being reset?

This happens when php does not write a valid xml file. I try to detect invalid xml files and try to fix this first. If this cannot be done I'll make a backup and start with a new valid xml file.

Seems the php guys have not implemented file locking properly on all systems.

Right now votes, views and download are in one file. I'll plan that the views counter can be in a different file because this one is written at every view.
