I have created private galleries for friends to add their photos, each with its own access password, and usernames/passwords to allow them to upload. When such a user logs in to upload to his/her gallery, why is it necessary to enter a gallery password to gain access? Surely if you have upload rights you should automatically have viewing rights too?

use the user login mode. Then you don't have to do this.
See the howto how to protect galleries.

I have read carefully HowTo12, and it appears that using $user_login_mode=true is the only way to give users automatic viewing rights to their own private folders. But this means that instead of sending a casual user the folder password, I must create a username and password for him/her and add it to the folder's private.txt file.

Would it be feasible to have private.txt contain something like:
general_pwd=abc123,users=brian,susan,harry
to provide the best of both methods, namely users brian, susan and harry have automatic access to the folder on login, and others without a username can use the password abc123?

Thank you - I would like to try.

I have searched for private.txt and $user_login_mode in the twg .php modules, but was unable to identify where they are used. Please could you point me at the modules I need to look at.

looking for
$privatelogin
is where the check is done.

i just did a small grep and there are at least 20 places where this has to be checked.

So I think it is actually a quite big change which effects a lot of places...
