After I enabled folder structure for cache images ($use_cache_with_dir=True;) - I started to receive permission denied errors in log. Everything worked fine (thumbnails and small images created, no errors in the frontend).
It appears that script tries to create folder 'cache' under '/admin' folder (which is locked for writing, except few writable files). I created folder '/admin/cache', granted write permisions for sript - no more errors. I see - that folder structure is created there (same as in /pictures and /cache) - but it's completely empty.

Just curious - is this forder structure really required?

1. set $enable_enhanced_debug=True;
2. renamed /admin/cache -> cache1

Perfect!
Even more interesting structure found under /cache.
Folder /pictures contains 60 subfolders and ~4200files.
Folder /cache has reasonable amount of files (~8400) and ... 1741 subfolders! :shock:
Empty folders (sometimes even recursively) seem to be created for css, php files, etc.

P.S. Linked text files show no files - only folders (output of 'tree /a').

Wow.

Seems I copy everything a coule of times...

Can I send you 1.8 RC1?

I don't know if everything is related to the cache creation I just found.
Because I never had the other structure you found.

The cache can have 3 times the amount of image you have in the pictures folder - thumb, detail and slideshow images.

and you should start with a fresh install. TWB 1.8 has ~600 files. Yours is already really crowded. Especially below the i_frames buttons is a bunch of folders I don't know why they are there.
