I'm doing a new install of 1.7.8 on my server. I unzipped the files, set the directory permissions and launched the info.php script. I get this error message:

Needless to say I don't have ffmpeg installed on the server. Any ideas on how best to get things working?

Server: SBS 2003, PHP Version 5.2.10

this means that you cannot execute any direct system calls - unfortunaely php copletely fails at this check.

simply don't turn on ffmpeg support in the config.
TWG should run fine without it.

Which php verison are you running? because there is a known bug in php 5.2.6 executing com objects.

I'm looking through config php files and can't figure out how to turn the ffmpeg support off.

it's

$use_ffmpeg=false;

and it's disabled by default.

Then why doesn't it let me run with it defaulted to off?

When I try to execute info.php I just get the error. When I try to execute index.php instead I get a portion of the page (Mexico image doesn't display). Clicking on 'login' doesn't do anything, though I was able to view the sample galleries.

(Later) I was able to launch admin/index.php and from there make some changes. Once I generated the cache I could see my two galleries, though I couldn't use the left or right buttons when viewing an image... Getting closer! :-)

it's only info.php which is always testing ffmpeg.
-
in index.php this is not used if turned off.

Seems your server is not configured properly. Because the demo gallery should be displayed on all systems. Clicking on login most likely does not work because if a half page is only loaded most likely important parts of the page are not loaded too.

Have you checked if counter/_mydebug.out exists which is the log file (or can be seen in the backend)?
