I've working on how to:

1 - add a new user (works fine now)
2 - make sure this new user can upload files (they can but also in other users folders???)
3 - make sure this new user cannot delete other users files

I'm thinking I'm doing something wrong with the permissions?

I can't find anything in the howto's about adding new users etc.?

if you give each user his own directory they can only access their directory. if you give more then one user the same directory they can of course delete the images there.

I am creating an "artist gallery" where artists can exhibit their creations. I have one folder with paintings, one with sculptures, photos, films, music etc.

So I've created a folder for each of these catagories.

In the paintings folder, I have e.g. a "Julie" and "Claus" folder, because they both have paintings exhibited at my gallery.

Do you have a step by step "how to" somewhere?

1) I create a new user from the admin area.
2a) I can't create a new folder by logging in to the gallery, choosing the twg flash uploader by clicking "upload" because when I click "options" the "create folder" option is grey.
2b) I create a folder for the new user via my ftp software, but I'm not sure how to give the right amount of permissions to each users folder.

Right now when I log in as e.g. Claus (user), and go to paintings folder, and go to e.g. Julies folder, "Claus" can upload to Julies folder and delete paintings.

I'm not sure if howto 6 is what I need, not sure I understand what it is explaining?

why another howto - the steps are sooo obvious.

you cannot create folders with the flash because of your safe mode restrictions. therefore you have to create them with ftp.
with the ftp you give them 777 as permissions!

Then you create a user - the important point is the directory!!!!!!
you e.g. give claus the folder
pictures/sculptures/claus
as folder and so on.

then claus can e.g. login anytime in the right upper corner - but only in his folder (and subfolders). he get the upload menu entry.

And what has howto 6 todo with it? NOTHING .
The one you should read is nr 37 ! (but this is the text shown in the back-end already)

This is a practical question mostly.
The way I understand it I can't give "claus" premission to upload into:

pictures/paintings/claus
AND
pictures/fotos/claus

?

I want to organize the gallery in paintings, sculptures, fotos etc. and give the user permission to upload both paintings, fotos, music etc.

But I can only give each user ONE folder, so they can't upload pictures in different catagories?

Will I have to organize the gallery in users, instead of catagories of art?

yes - or create more users - then claus e.g. gets 3 logins.

But good point - maybe I enhance the administration that a user can have more than one home folder if he is a frontend user.

I don't know anything about programming, but couldn't I create an "alias" from e.g. pictures/paintings/claus to pictures/fotos/claus

Like I can do in my system software on my computer?

If you made it possible for a user to have access to multible folders in multible catagory-folders IT WOULD BE GREAT !

It would be even better if, once a user has been created by me, he could then himself create a folder in a new catagory. E.g. "claus" has been created, so he creates a folder in "paintings" for his paintings, another folder in "fotos" for his fotos etc.

I suppose I should rethink my business, since I imagine such a feature would take a long time to create. tooo baaaad for me

that a user can create dirs in different locations is not possible - this means that he has the right in the upper folder.
Then he would have full access already.

I'll add the multiple folders for a user to my new feature list for 1.7.
But the list for 1.7 is already very long.

I don't suppose you have a date set for that release yet, so I'll be waiting. I'm also waiting for moneybookers to draw a small amout from my creditcard (part of the signup at their website), so I can register.

i create a user folder and then the only folder i can specify is pictures while adding the user. if the user is fred and i specify /fred or pictures/fred
or /pictures/fred or just fred the upload link does not show up for fred
when he is logged in. when i name freds upload folder path to pictures
he can now upload to his folder but, he can upload to everybody elses too!
so what can i do

have you set freds folder permissions to 777 ?

the right folder would be

pictures/fred

which right does the user have - because by default a user gets "frontend edit" - this mean he can add captions.

you need at least "Frontend Upload"

i have that set correctly, right now i am uploading something so i cant
change anything, but i was just thinking its possible that the folders that are there now, that come with the download are not assigned to any
user, is this why maybe any new users can upload to these? just something i was pondering.

if you create a user you have to assing a directory - be default this is pictures - this means access to all folders.

yes i did that. i created a user named fred then i manually created a folder named fred chmod to 777 set his path in admin to pictures/fred but when fred logged in he did not see the upload link. do you follow me?
